WELCOME
Our Lifelong Learning Community (LLCO) formerly the NIU Lifelong Learning Institute, is a member-directed group of individuals, primarily age 60+, who enjoy learning in informal, flexible, non-competitive groups and like connecting with peers who share their interests. No grades, no tests- just learning for the fun of it.
MORE ABOUT LIFELONG LEARNING
Our LLCO, based in DeKalb, Illinois, is open to everyone, whatever their level of education or their background. All you need is a sense of curiosity and a love of learning. Participants enjoy learning, sharing experiences and making new friends in LLCO’s wide variety of classes that typically include topics in history, music, science, politics, and more.
Each term, your affordable registration fee allows you to attend as many study groups as you wish during that term; it’s an all-you-can-learn buffet.
In these classes, you could have learned the answers to questions such as these:
Why did Africa use banking by cell phone before the United States?
Why must acting students learn the International Phonetic Alphabet?
How and why are Japanese and Western gardens different?
Why did 20th century fascism come to power in Italy before it did in Germany?
What is a protest song?
What is ranked choice voting and how does it work?
Egyptomania
National Parks
We are a member-run organization. Members do everything from setting policies to running registration. Volunteers, mostly members, also lead classes during our three terms each year.
WHERE & WHEN
LLCO classes meet once a week at the Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center, with convenient parking and in-house lunch options available. Classes are offered on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and afternoons during three six-week terms. Terms generally run from mid-September to the end of October, mid-January to the end of February, and mid-March to the end of April. Winter classes will be conducted by Zoom (January and February). We hope to have a central room at Oak Crest so all Oak Ccrest residents may enjoy the classes in one space in the desire to do so.
